VAS Crosshair Xtreme Pair is a pair of directional antennas with right-hand circular polarization RHCP, an SMA male 90° connector, and a gain of 10.25 dBic for the 5300-6400 MHz band. The set is made directly for HDZero Goggle V1/V2, and includes left and right mounts that simply slide onto the goggles' rail system (“rail system”). The antenna works with both analog and digital video transmission in the 5.8 GHz band.

HDZero uses two independent receivers, one on the left and one on the right side of the goggles, and combines both signals into the resulting image. The Crosshair Xtreme pair uses this architecture for spatial diversity — both antennas point forward in front of the pilot, where range and signal penetration are needed most, and at the same time they are spaced apart, so they complement each other in reflections and partial obstructions.

The antenna is based on patented vector-phasing technology, protected by patent US11442130. It gives the transmitted signal smooth rotation and reduces short dropouts that receivers with other antennas see as image breakup. The measured axial ratio of 0.99 means very clean circular polarization, thanks to which the antenna more effectively suppresses reflections and opposite-polarization signals. The wide band covers not only the common 5.8 GHz channels, but also the lower 5.3 GHz and upper 6 GHz range.

The radiation beam is 120°, with a -3 dB drop occurring only at an offset of ±30° from the axis. For a directional antenna, this is an unusually wide pattern. The antenna is tolerant of model movement and head turning and does not require precise aiming, which is essential for mounting directly on goggles. Nevertheless, it remains directional and we do not recommend using it as the only receiver antenna. The manufacturer recommends supplementing it on the upper ports of the goggles with omnidirectional VAS Victory antennas (sold separately). Directional antennas provide range and signal penetration through trees and buildings, while omnidirectional antennas cover the near surroundings, takeoffs and landings.

The mounts are 3D printed and supplied in black. If a different color is needed or the mount is damaged, VAS has published a 3D model for self-printing and recommends PLA+ or PETG for better heat resistance in the sun.

Video Aerial Systems (VAS) is an American company focused on antenna development and manufacturing. It owns several of its own patents, and their antennas are among the absolute best.
